Iyengar Yoga

“It is through the alignment of the body that I discovered the alignment of my mind, self, and
intelligence.” B.K.S. Iyengar

A student of ayurvedic healer and scholar T. Krishnamacharya – considered by many to be “the father of modern yoga”, B.K.S. Iyengar developed his innovative and inspired approach to yoga through intense practice and self-study. His famous book, Light on Yoga, has been continuously in print since originally published in 1966.

“The yoga I teach is purely Astanga yoga, known as the eight limbs of yoga. My
pupils who follow me call it ‘Iyengar Yoga’ to distinguish it from the teachings of others.”

Operating from a basis of 8 main principles, Iyengar yoga is for anyone and everyone, through all stages of life. Structured towards gradual and steady progress rather than quick and fleeting results, each class is a unique sequence developed by an Iyengar certified teacher, to guide students through a safe and systematic progression.

Your experienced and highly-qualified teacher will help each student find their own level for each pose, and props may be used to make poses accessible and ensure correct execution.

The focus of Iyengar on postural alignment means it is a particularly good practice for dealing with postural and structural problems within the body; while the concentration required to giving full attention to the precise details of each pose results in a stilling of the mind to relieve stress and anxiety.

Iyengar yoga is about quality of movement rather than quantity, and our skilled instruction guides students to penetrate beyond the physical body, accessing the inner layers of mind, energy and spirit to achieve feelings of calm clarity and exuberant vitality.

Students are led through this systematic progression by our skilled instructors, continually mindful that practice must be an honest reflection of students’ abilities and with safety in mind, and directed by the main principles of Iyengar yoga.

B.K.S Iyengar

“Yoga is a light, which once lit, will never dim. The better your practice, the brighter the flame.” B.K.S. Iyengar

B.K.S Iyengar was an inspiration and guru to many, due to his remarkable life, physical contortions, and continual embodiment of yogic alignment. We remain forever grateful for his wisdom, which was delivered with humility and a good deal of wit.

Known fondly as ‘guruji’ by his students around the world to this day, his passing in 2014 at the age of 95 has proven the quote above, because his teachings remain as bright and alive as ever they were. Guruji we will always love and appreciate you.
